Yvonne Ybarra, director of cellular therapy for GenCure, a subsidiary of the San-Antonio based nonprofit biotech BioBridge Global, has been named chair of the Council Advisory Group (CAG) of the National Marrow Donor Program® (NMDP). She took the role on Oct. 1 and is now a voting member of the NMDP board of directors.

The NMDP’s Be The Match® program facilitates transplants of bone marrow and cord blood for those facing leukemia, lymphoma and other blood cancers; conducts research; provides support and resources for patients; and provides education for physicians. Volunteer donors join the marrow registry in hopes of being a match for and donating to a patient in need of a cure. With a swab of the inside of the cheek, donors join people around the world who want to help save lives.

Longtime biomedical industry executive Martin Landon has been named chief executive officer of BioBridge Global (BBG), the nonprofit organization that oversees and supports the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center (STBTC), QualTex Laboratories, GenCure and The Blood & Tissue Center Foundation. The announcement was made today by BBG Board Chair Mike Kreager.

Landon will join BBG on Oct. 1 and, to ensure a smooth leadership transition, will work with current CEO Linda Myers through the end of the month, Kreager said.  In July, Myers announced plans to retire from the organization.

Local patient inspires heroes to look further

Every day our recruiters and staff reach into the community to do what seems to be the impossible, to save lives. We pound the pavement inspiring strangers to become heroes, while our techs work round the clock to take what our donors selflessly provide (blood, stem cells, tissue) and transform it into lifesaving treatments for patients in need of transfusions, transplants… and, yes, hope.

But what drives us to do this? On any given day our staff could tell you stories of patients that we’ve fought for and have inspired us. Today that patient is Rowan.

One theme always seems to shine through when it comes to donors at any of the BioBridge Global subsidiaries: Helping others first.

From those who give blood products as part of the regular routine, to those called to save a life via stem cells, to new mothers asked to donate cord blood, everyone understands the need to be part of something bigger than themselves.

“My friends don’t see the importance of giving, and I just don’t know why,” says Marcos Perez III, a San Antonio postal worker who has donated more than 90 gallons of blood and platelets in the last 40-plus years. “One donation saved my life a long time ago. I want to give back.”

The commitment to selflessness is year-round, but those donations are recognized specifically in April, which is National Donate Life Month.
