Test to identify antibody levels developed in partnership with XBiotech
April 3, 2020

The South Texas Blood & Tissue Center, a subsidiary of San Antonio-based BioBridge Global, is participating in a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigational program for U.S. blood centers to begin collecting and distributing convalescent plasma from individuals who have recovered from COVID-19.

While COVID-19 currently has no proven treatment, it is possible that convalescent plasma, which contains antibodies to the virus that causes COVID-19, may provide passive immunity to certain patients with severe forms of the illness. Plasma is the liquid component of the bloodstream, and it includes the disease-fighting antibodies that a body produces in response to an infection.

Blood donation has been designated an essential public health activity, and South Texas Blood & Tissue Center needs the community to continue to donate blood to prevent blood shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic.

South Texas Blood & Tissue Center, a subsidiary of nonprofit BioBridge Global, has scheduled several blood drives in the next week at locations large enough to accommodate social distancing.

The locations include community centers, hotel meeting rooms, and church gyms or meeting rooms. They are replacing more than 100 blood drives canceled at schools, churches, businesses and other organizations throughout South Texas in the past 14 days.

blood_donatio_exemptionBecause blood donation has been designated an essential activity necessary for maintaining the blood supply, blood banks are included on the list of Health Care Services and activities that are exempted from the “Stay Home Work Safe Measures” announced yesterday by the City of San Antonio and Bexar County.

The announcement was included in the Declaration of Public Health Emergency Regarding COVID-19 by the City of San Antonio and Bexar County, which goes into effect at 11:59 p.m. today. This exemption allows donors and employees of BioBridge Global and the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center, a subsidiary of BioBridge Global, to continue with the lifesaving activities involved in giving and collecting blood and in providing it to hospitals and patients in our community.
